Spy Kids is a 2001 American adventure comedy film written, edited, directed and produced by Robert Rodriguez. The movie features Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez, two retired spies who have settled into a quiet suburban life with their two children, Carmen and Juni.
One day, all of their former colleagues, who were supposed to be dead or retired, start to disappear under mysterious circumstances. The Cortez parents are called back into action by their former boss, to uncover the sinister plot behind the disappearances.
However, things take a turn for the worse when the Cortez family is captured by their old enemy, Fegan Floop, a criminal mastermind who has created a virtual reality show that mesmerizes children all over the world.
Carmen and Juni, who were left behind, decide to take matters into their own hands and rescue their parents. They use their wits and some of the gadgets their parents left behind to infiltrate Floop's lair, teaming up with some unlikely allies along the way.
The movie is known for its imaginative gadgets and futuristic technology, such as a mechanical dog that can shoot missiles, a watch that doubles as a grappling hook, and an inflatable bubble suit that allows the wearer to bounce and roll like a human hamster.
Spy Kids received generally positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success, grossing over $147 million worldwide. The film spawned three sequels, with the last one, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, being released in 2011.
