Spree is a 2020 horror comedy film directed by Eugene Kotlyarenko and written by Kotlyarenko and Gene McHugh. The film stars Joe Keery, Sasheer Zamata, David Arquette, Kyle Mooney, Mischa Barton and Frankie Grande.
The movie follows the story of Kurt Kunkle, played by Joe Keery, a young and ambitious ride-share driver who is trying to become a social media influencer. Kurt is frustrated that he hasn't been able to achieve the level of internet fame that he desires, despite his efforts to create content and engage with his small following.
In an attempt to go viral, Kurt comes up with a disturbing plan to live-stream a series of murders on his rideshare platform. Armed with various camera rigs, Kurt sets out on a killing spree, picking up unsuspecting passengers and filming their gruesome deaths.
As the body count rises and Kurt's livestream gains more and more attention on social media, a young comedian named Jessie Adams, played by Sasheer Zamata, becomes embroiled in Kurt's sinister plot. Jessie begins to suspect that something is not right with Kurt's ride, and sets out to stop him before more innocent people are hurt.
The film touches upon themes of social media addiction, the dangers of fame-seeking culture, and the dark side of internet stardom. It was praised by critics for its unique blend of horror and comedy and timely exploration of the negative side effects of social media culture.
