In the movie, Sandra Bullock's character, Annie, is now in a new relationship with a police officer named Alex, played by Jason Patric. The couple decides to go on a Caribbean cruise together, but their romantic getaway quickly turns into a nightmare when a crazed computer hacker, John Geiger (Willem Dafoe), takes control of the ship's navigation system.
Geiger, who was fired as the cruise's computer expert, seeks revenge by hijacking the ship and setting it on a collision course with an oil tanker. As the clock ticks down and the ship gains speed, Alex and Annie race against time to regain control of the ship and prevent a disaster.
Along the way, they encounter a number of obstacles, including Geiger's loyal henchmen, explosive devices, and the ship's own automated systems. Eventually, they are able to outsmart Geiger and save the ship from destruction.
Despite the high-speed action and impressive special effects, the movie was a critical and commercial disappointment, failing to live up to the success of its predecessor, Speed.
