Andie Bergstrom is a NASA astronaut who is selected to lead a summer camp program for teenagers interested in space. Her husband, Zach, is also a NASA employee and helps run the camp. The camp is located at the Kennedy Space Center, where the teenagers get the opportunity to experience a simulated shuttle launch.
While participating in an engine test with the teenagers, Andie accidentally activates the launch sequence, causing them to be launched into space. The five of them are now stranded in orbit and must figure out how to operate the spacecraft and return home before their oxygen runs out.
Kathryn, a teenage pilot-in-training, takes charge and leads the group in calculating their trajectory, using the computer systems, and communicating with NASA for assistance. Tish, the ditzy but knowledgable camper, uses her perfect memory to recall important details to help solve problems.
Meanwhile, back on Earth, Andie's NASA co-workers and the teenagers' parents are scrambling to find a way to bring them back safely. The group struggles with various challenges, including limited oxygen, malfunctioning equipment, and communication blackout, as they attempt to fly the spacecraft back to Earth.
In the end, the group successfully lands back on Earth and becomes heroes for their bravery and resourcefulness in a dangerous situation. Andie and Zach decide to leave NASA and continue running the space camp program for future generations of aspiring astronauts.
