The main character of Space Oddity is Alex, a man who has been obsessed with space since he was a child. He knows everything there is to know about the planets and the stars, and dreams of one day visiting other worlds.
One day, Alex learns about a new Mars colonization program that is looking for volunteers to help establish a human presence on the red planet. He jumps at the opportunity and is soon selected to be a part of the mission.
But as he is preparing to leave Earth, Alex meets a woman named Emily who works at the space agency. They quickly strike up a friendship and soon develop feelings for each other. Alex is torn between his love for Emily and his dream of going to Mars.
As the mission draws nearer, Alex becomes more conflicted. He knows that going to Mars is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but he is starting to realize that it may not be worth losing Emily over. Eventually, he must make a difficult choice between his passions and his heart.
