The Jungle Nitroglycerin Expedition

Thriller,Adventure  United States of America,Mexico

Sorcerer is a 1977 thriller film directed by William Friedkin and starring Roy Scheider, Bruno Cremer, Francisco Rabal, and Amidou. The movie is a remake of the French film The Wages of Fear and is considered one of the most intense and suspenseful thrillers of its time.

The story follows four men from different parts of the world who have fled their pasts and are living in poverty and desperation in a remote South American town. They are offered a dangerous and highly lucrative job by an American oil company: to transport two trucks full of unstable nitroglycerin across 200 miles of treacherous jungle terrain to put out an oil field fire.

The first half of the movie depicts the characters’ struggles to prepare for the journey, including negotiating with the oil company, testing the nitroglycerin, and choosing the best route through the perilous jungle. The second half of the film follows the men as they embark on the deadly journey, encountering obstacles such as steep mountain roads, rickety bridges, and explosive booby traps along the way.

Sorcerer is known for its tension-filled cinematography, claustrophobic visuals, and haunting score by Tangerine Dream. Friedkin also employed practical effects and stunts to create realistic and heart-pounding sequences, such as the suspenseful crossing of a narrow wooden bridge over a raging river.

Although Sorcerer was a critical success, it was a commercial flop upon release, partly due to competition from Star Wars, which premiered around the same time. However, the film has since gained cult status and is considered a classic of the thriller genre.
