Sophie Hagan is a retired nurse who has turned her home in Cottonwood into a shelter for people going through difficult times. The movie, titled Sophie's Rules, follows the lives of five different individuals who are living in the shelter: a terminally ill woman named Mary, an alcoholic magician named Neil, a PTSD veteran named David, a young drug addict named Alex, and a grieving mother named Laura.

Mary, who is suffering from terminal cancer, is cared for by Sophie and the other residents in the house. Neil, who struggles with alcohol addiction, is forced to confront his demons and seek help. David, a veteran who has returned from war with PTSD, finds support and comfort in the other residents. Alex, a young drug addict, discovers a sense of purpose and a reason to live through his interactions with Sophie and the others at the shelter. And Laura, who is grieving the loss of her daughter, finds solace in the connections she forms with the other residents.
