Sons and Lovers is a 1960 British drama film directed by Jack Cardiff and based on the novel of the same name by D.H. Lawrence. The film stars Trevor Howard, Dean Stockwell, Wendy Hiller, Mary Ure and Heather Sears.

The story follows Paul Morel (Dean Stockwell), the son of a coal miner (Trevor Howard) and his mother (Wendy Hiller), who have a close and complex relationship. Paul dreams of becoming a painter and moves to London to attend art school. While in London, he meets and starts a romantic relationship with a married woman named Clara (Mary Ure). His mother is deeply jealous of their relationship and becomes increasingly controlling and possessive.

As Paul's career begins to take off, his relationship with Clara begins to crumble under the weight of his mother's interference. Paul becomes torn between his love for Clara and his loyalty to his mother, who is struggling with her own loneliness and regret.

The film was critically acclaimed and received numerous awards and nominations, including four Academy Award nominations and a win for Wendy Hiller as Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival. It is considered a landmark in British cinema and an important work of literary adaptation.
