As Murakawa and his surviving gang members attempt to flee, they are pursued by the enemy gang and engage in a number of violent confrontations. The group eventually seeks refuge on a remote beach, where they spend their days fishing, playing games and contemplating their uncertain future. However, the peaceful interlude is short-lived as the enemy gang soon catches up with them and the violence escalates once again. Murakawa faces difficult decisions as he struggles to keep his remaining members alive and protect himself against his own boss, who seems intent on betraying him. The film is known for its dreamlike quality, poetic cinematography and extended periods of introspection between bouts of bloody violence. It is considered one of Kitano's most iconic and influential films.
