Tim Avery is a struggling cartoonist who works at an animation company. He dreamt of becoming a cartoonist who creates his own characters but ends up creating boring, generic characters for his company. His wife Tonya wants children, but Tim is not ready for fatherhood and is hesitant about starting a family.
One day, Tim's dog, Otis, discovers the mask of Loki, a powerful artifact that transforms the wearer into a mischievous trickster, enabling them to warp reality and turn into different creatures. When Tim wears the mask to attend a costume party, he becomes possessed by its power and creates a new character named "Tornado" that impresses his boss.
Tim eventually discovers that Tonya is pregnant. However, the baby is born with the powers of the mask, causing chaos and mayhem wherever he goes. The baby, named Alvey, can warp reality much like the mask, which attracts the attention of Loki, who wants the mask back. Loki tries to take Alvey away from the Averys, but Tim and his family protect Alvey with their unique abilities.
Despite the challenges of raising a child with extraordinary powers and dealing with Loki's attempts to reclaim the mask, Tim learns to embrace fatherhood and becomes a better person. Eventually, he returns the mask to its rightful place, and Loki leaves without causing any harm.
