Son of Rambow is a coming-of-age comedy-drama directed by Garth Jennings, which tells the story of two young boys who form an unlikely friendship in early 1980s England. Will Proudfoot is a shy and creative 11-year-old who comes from a highly religious and sheltered family. He has never watched TV or films, nor has he ever seen a movie outside of the Bible stories shown in his religious education classes.
One day, while sitting in the school hallway during a break, Will crosses paths with Lee Carter, a rebellious and trouble-making student who gets into fights and flouts school rules. Lee is also an aspiring filmmaker who wants to make an action movie based on his favorite film, Rambo: First Blood. Will is fascinated by Lee's video camera and his knowledge of "film-stuff," and soon agrees to help him in his film project.
As they start to shoot their film, which they call "Son of Rambow," Will and Lee face multiple challenges, from finding the perfect location for their movie to dealing with uncooperative actors and the strict school authorities. Meanwhile, Will's family and the other members of the local religious community become suspicious of his new interest in popular culture and band together to put an end to his "heathen" behavior.
Despite these obstacles, Will and Lee's creative collaboration leads them to explore their own identities and their place in the world as they bond over their shared love of cinema.
