The film begins with Laurel Sommersby (Jodie Foster) receiving the news that her husband Jack (Richard Gere) has been killed in the Civil War. Laurel is devastated by the news, but she decides to carry on with her life and run their farm. She is assisted by her loyal worker, Orin Meecham (Bill Pullman), who is secretly in love with her.

Six years later, Jack returns to their small town, surprising everyone with his sudden appearance. Although Jack was known to be a cruel and abusive husband, Laurel is hopeful that he has changed during his time away. Jack claims that he has, indeed, become a better man, having learned many valuable lessons during the war.

However, some people in the town are suspicious of Jack's sudden reappearance. One of them is Judge Barry Conrad Issacs (James Earl Jones), who has long suspected that Jack was involved in his brother's murder. Jack's past sins are further exposed when he abuses Orin, who had previously testified against him in court.

As the story progresses, Laurel becomes increasingly torn between her doubts about Jack's identity and her desire to believe that he has changed for the better. Meanwhile, Jack becomes involved in a legal dispute over land ownership and is also accused of a violent crime. Ultimately, the truth about Jack's identity and his past sins are revealed, leading to a dramatic conclusion.

Sommersby is a thought-provoking film that explores themes of identity, redemption, and forgiveness. It is beautifully shot and features strong performances from its all-star cast, particularly Jodie Foster and Richard Gere as Laurel and Jack Sommersby, respectively. The film is rated PG-13 and runs for 1 hour and 54 minutes.
