Richard Collier, played by Christopher Reeve, is a successful playwright who becomes obsessed with a woman he has never met after she approaches him and says, "Come back to me." The woman, Elise McKenna, is played by Jane Seymour and is a famous actress from the early 1900s. Despite the fact that she died many years ago, Richard becomes determined to somehow reach her.
Through self-hypnosis, Richard travels back in time to the year 1912 and meets Elise. They fall in love, but their time together is threatened by various obstacles. Elise's manager, William Fawcett Robinson, played by Christopher Plummer, disapproves of their relationship and tries to keep them apart.
Richard and Elise continue to see each other in secret, but their happiness is short-lived when Richard realizes that he is fading from reality and will soon be sucked back into the present day. He must choose between staying in the past with Elise or returning to the present and the life he knows.
Somewhere in Time is a romantic and emotional movie about the enduring power of love. The film is best remembered for its hauntingly beautiful score, composed by John Barry, and for the performances of its two lead actors, Reeve and Seymour. The film has become a classic in the romance genre and has a devoted fan base to this day.
