Leo Russo is a hard-working father who has always dreamed of seeing his son, Johnny, succeed on the basketball court. But when Johnny starts showing promise on his high school team, Leo becomes consumed with getting him to the top.
Leo's obsession with his son's success causes tension within the family, as his wife Angela and their other children feel neglected and overshadowed. Leo's brother and sister also become involved, trying to offer unsolicited advice and opinions on how Johnny should play.
