Reckless Ambition: The Stampers' Struggle in Oregon

Action,Adventure,Drama  United States of America

Sometimes a Great Notion is a 1970 drama film directed by Paul Newman, based on the novel of the same name by Ken Kesey. The film stars Newman as Hank Stamper, a logger in the Oregon wilderness who is determined to continue cutting down trees with his family in spite of the protests of the local townspeople and his estranged half-brother Leland (Michael Sarrazin), who has come to work for them.

The film explores themes of family loyalty, perseverance, and individualism in the face of a changing world. Hank Stamper is depicted as a rugged individualist who values his family above all else and is willing to do whatever it takes to preserve their way of life, even at the expense of the town's economic future and his relationship with his wife Viv (played by Henry Fonda's daughter, Jane Fonda).

As the conflict between the Stampers and the rest of the town becomes more heated, tensions rise within the family as well. Leland, who is initially at odds with Hank, gradually comes to understand his brother's point of view and becomes more committed to the cause.

The film features stunning cinematography of the Oregon wilderness and a powerful soundtrack by composer Henry Mancini. Although it had a mixed reception upon its release and was not a commercial success, Sometimes a Great Notion has since become a cult classic and is regarded as one of Newman's most ambitious and personal projects as a director.
