Sofia is a Moroccan drama film directed by Meryem Benm'Barek and released in 2018. The movie follows the story of a young woman named Sofia, who finds herself in a dilemma after experiencing pregnancy denial. Even though Sofia is visibly pregnant, she denies it and tries to live her life as if everything is normal. However, her situation becomes complicated when she goes into labor and gives birth to a baby boy out of wedlock.

As per Moroccan law, Sofia needs to provide the father's papers within 24 hours or face severe consequences. Sofia's parents try to help her, but they soon realize that their daughter has been hiding a lot from them. They struggle to find out who the father is, but Sofia remains steadfast in her denial. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking, and they need to find a solution before time runs out.

The film is a poignant social commentary on the oppressive laws and cultural practices prevalent in Morocco. The story highlights the challenges that women face in the country, especially when it comes to issues like sex outside marriage, unwanted pregnancies, and patriarchal norms. Through Sofia's character, the movie portrays the struggles of women who have little or no control over their bodies and destinies.

The film received critical acclaim upon its release, with many lauding its realistic portrayal of Moroccan society and its nuanced performances. Sofia won the screenplay award in Cannes' Un Certain Regard section in 2018.
