Soeurs d'armes is a French drama film released in 2019 and directed by Caroline Fourest. The movie follows the story of two young women from opposite ends of the social spectrum, Kenza and Yaël, who end up meeting in Syria as they both volunteer as combatants with the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) against ISIS.
Kenza, a nurse from a poor and troubled neighborhood in France, decides to leave behind her difficult life and joins the Kurdish forces while Yaël, a Jewish journalist from Belgium, goes to Syria to cover the conflict. The two women are soon thrown together in combat and they must learn to trust each other in order to survive. As they fight side by side, they encounter many challenges and obstacles, but their common desire to protect their Kurdish comrades and form a bond of sisterhood helps them overcome the odds.
The film explores the brutal realities of the Syrian conflict and the toll it takes on these young women as they face danger and sacrifice their lives for a cause they believe in. Soeurs d'armes provides a unique perspective on female fighters and the important roles they play in armed conflicts. The movie features an excellent cast, including Morjana Alaoui as Kenza, Amira Casar as Hanna, and Dilan Gwyn as Yaël and is based on the true story of French journalist Anna Erelle who went to Syria to investigate the recruitment of young women by the Islamic State.
