The Miami dentist, Ted Brooks (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.), is shocked when he inherits a team of sled dogs from a recent deceased mother whom he has never met before. He heads to Alaska to sell the dogs and use the money to finance a new dental clinic but upon arriving in Alaska, he realizes that his plans have to change. The dogs are part of his inheritance, which also comes with a cabin and other valuable property.
Ted's lack of knowledge and inexperience with dog sledding become evident as soon as he tries to ride the sled, and he has an accident. He soon meets an old mountain man named Thunder Jack, who claims he is the rightful owner of the dogs and tries to buy them from Ted. As Ted starts to learn about sled dog racing and bonding with the dogs, he realizes that he wants to keep the dogs and enter the annual Arctic Challenge sled dog race.
With the help of his friend Barlow and a beautiful Eskimo woman named Nana, Ted begins training the dogs and himself for the race. During the intense training session, Ted and the dogs experience several mishaps, including getting lost in a snowstorm, and confronting a rogue grizzly bear.
As the race approaches, Ted must compete with Thunder Jack, who has won the race five times before. The tension between the two men escalates, and ultimately, they both have to face the challenges of the race.
In the end, Ted and the dogs cross the finish line in first place, with Thunder Jack and his team close behind. Ted learns the values of hard work, perseverance, and friendship, and decides to stay in Alaska with his new family of sled dogs. The movie ends with Ted and his dogs on a beautiful snowy hill, enjoying their new life in the Arctic.
