Trish Santos, played by Jennifer Lawrence, is a struggling artist who is not finding much success in her career or personal life. On her 30th birthday, her boyfriend breaks up with her, leaving her feeling lost and alone. Trish turns to her online art students for a sense of connection and community, and she discovers that helping others with their art is helping her heal.
Trish's two best friends, played by Aubrey Plaza and Michael B. Jordan, do their best to cheer her up and encourage her to move on. But it is a box of homemade self-help tapes from the mysterious "mind painter" Doc Garcia, played by Antonio Banderas, that really changes Trish's life. Each tape is filled with affirmations and guided visualizations, and Trish finds herself listening to one after the other as she sets out to embrace a new chapter in her life.
Through her journey, Trish discovers her own strength and learns to love herself. She also finds unexpected love in the form of the charming and quirky art instructor, played by John Boyega, who helps her rediscover her passion for painting. With the support of her friends, her students, and the inspiration from the self-help tapes, Trish begins to smile and hug her way back to happiness.
