Wayne Stobierski is a man-child who has never grown up. He lives with his mother in their small town in Wisconsin, where he spends most of his time playing video games and avoiding responsibility. Despite his immaturity, Wayne loves his son and is devastated when he loses custody to his ex-wife.
Determined to spend one last weekend with his son before he goes back to his mother's house, Wayne hatches a plan to steal him away for a trip to the city of their dreams - Milwaukee. With no real plan and even less money, Wayne and his son set off on their adventure.
As they explore Milwaukee, they encounter a diverse cast of characters who challenge their worldview and force them to confront their own shortcomings. From a homeless veteran to a struggling single mother, Wayne and his son begin to see the world in a different light.
As the weekend progresses, Wayne realizes that he needs to grow up and become a better father to his son. He starts to take responsibility for his life and faces the consequences of his actions. In the end, he learns that being a good father means putting his son's needs before his own wants and desires.
