Sleuth is a 1972 British thriller film directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and based on the play of the same name by Anthony Shaffer. The film stars Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine in the lead roles.

The story revolves around Andrew Wyke (Laurence Olivier), a successful mystery writer who lives on a vast country estate. He is approached by a young actor named Milo Tindle (Michael Caine) who is having an affair with Wyke's wife, Marguerite. Wyke, who is aware of the affair, suggests that Milo steal his wife's jewelry to finance the couple's future together.

As the plot thickens, it becomes clear that Wyke has more sinister intentions. He invites Milo to his home, where the two engage in a battle of wits as they play a series of elaborate mind games with each other. The game becomes increasingly intense as they try to outsmart each other, with both men using their intelligence and cunning to gain the upper hand.

The film is renowned for its sharp dialogue and highly suspenseful plot, as well as the powerful performances of its two lead actors. Olivier and Caine were both nominated for Academy Awards for their roles in the film.

Sleuth was remade in 2007 with Jude Law and Michael Caine in the lead roles, and although the remake was well-received, the original film remains a classic of the thriller genre.
