Sleepless Town is a Japanese crime movie directed by Lee Chi-Ngai and released in 1998. The story takes place in Kabukicho, a red-light district in Tokyo, where criminal gangs from various Chinese provinces have established their bases and are fighting for control.
Kenichi, the main character, is a skilled thief and gambler, known for his excellent memory and quick reflexes. He is half-Japanese and half-Chinese, but his loyalties lie with the Shanghai gang run by his boss, Shiomi. Kenichi's job is to collect debts and monitor the criminal activities of rival gangs, including the Cantonese and the Taiwanese.
One day, Kenichi's life takes a sharp turn when he meets a beautiful Chinese woman named Natsumi. She has arrived in Japan to find her missing brother Fu-Chun, who was Kenichi's former partner-in-crime. Kenichi and Natsumi develop a romantic relationship, but their happiness is short-lived when they discover that Fu-Chun has returned to Kabukicho to seek revenge on the gang boss who betrayed him.
Yuan, the leader of the Taiwanese gang, is plotting to use Fu-Chun to assassinate Shiomi and take over the Shanghai gang's territory. To lure Fu-Chun into his trap, Yuan kidnaps Natsumi, and Kenichi is forced to choose between his loyalty to his boss and his love for Natsumi. Meanwhile, the other gangs are exploiting the chaos to launch attacks on each other and expand their territories.
The movie features intense action sequences, thrilling chases, and a complex web of alliances and betrayals among the various criminal factions. Sleepless Town is a gripping crime drama that portrays the gritty underbelly of Tokyo's nightlife and the human drama of people caught in the crossfire of gang wars.
