In the film, the young woman named Laura Burney (played by Julia Roberts) is married to a wealthy man named Martin (played by Patrick Bergin). At first, their marriage appears perfect, but soon Laura realizes that Martin is a controlling and abusive husband.
After an incident where Martin almost kills Laura, she decides to fake her own death and start a new life. She stage manages a boating accident and leaves behind her wedding ring to make Martin believe she has drowned.
Laura moves to a small town in Iowa and starts a new life under a false identity. She meets a kind and gentle man named Ben (played by Kevin Anderson) and starts to fall in love with him. However, Martin eventually discovers that Laura is still alive and starts to track her down.
As Martin gets closer to Laura, she realizes that she will never be able to escape him. The final confrontation takes place in Laura's new home, where Martin confronts her and Ben. In a thrilling climax, Laura manages to defeat Martin and finally escape his control.
Sleeping with the Enemy was released in 1991 and was directed by Joseph Ruben. The film was a box office success and received mixed reviews from critics.
