Skate Kitchen

Drama  United States of America

Skate Kitchen is a 2018 independent drama film directed by Crystal Moselle. The film stars Rachelle Vinberg as Camille, a shy and introverted teenager living in Long Island, New York, who discovers the world of skateboarding and forms a deep bond with a group of all-female skaters.

As Camille delves deeper into the skateboarding culture, she begins to experience a sense of freedom that she has never felt before. She finds a sense of belonging and a family in the skater girls' community. However, not all is smooth-sailing as she navigates the different personalities and dynamics within the group while trying to maintain a balance between her passion for skateboarding and her family life.

Skate Kitchen not only sheds light on the world of female skaters but also on the struggles of growing up as a teenager, exploring themes of self-discovery, friendship, and identity. The film showcases a diverse cast of women skaters, including Nina Moran, Kabrina Adams, Ajani Russell, Jules Lorenzo, and Brenn Lorenzo, who all bring an authentic and fresh perspective to the story.

The film was acclaimed for its realistic depiction of teenage life and its portrayal of the female skateboarding community. Moselle, who also directed the Golden Globe-winning documentary The Wolfpack, worked with real-life skaters to create an authentic portrayal of the subculture. Skate Kitchen was screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2018 and was later picked up for distribution by Magnolia Pictures. The success of the film led to the creation of a television series titled Betty, set in the same universe.
