Sissi is a 1955 Austrian film directed by Ernst Marischka and starring Romy Schneider in the title role. The film is based on the real-life story of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, who was known as Sissi. The story begins with a 15-year-old Sissi traveling with her family from Bavaria to Austria to attend the wedding of her older sister Néné to Emperor Franz Joseph I. Along the way, Sissi meets Franz while he is fishing and they quickly fall in love. However, Franz is obligated to marry Néné for political reasons. Sissi is heartbroken but continues to visit Franz in secret. Meanwhile, Sissi's mother and Franz's mother, Archduchess Sophie, clash over the future of the Habsburg dynasty. Eventually, Franz breaks off his engagement to Néné and proposes to Sissi, much to his mother's disapproval. The film ends with Sissi and Franz's joyful wedding ceremony. Sissi was a huge commercial success and spawned two sequels: Sissi: The Young Empress (1956) and Sissi: The Fateful Years of an Empress (1957). The films helped turn Schneider into an international star and transformed the real-life Sissi into a beloved figure of Austrian and Bavarian folklore.
