Matt Gordon, played by Fred MacMurray, is a former soldier who returns to Singapore after the war to claim a fortune in smuggled pearls that he had hidden before he was captured by the Japanese. Upon his arrival, he encounters Linda Grahame, played by Ava Gardner, who was his fiancée before the war. Linda had disappeared during the Japanese attack on Singapore and was presumed dead. However, she resurfaces with amnesia and is now married to a wealthy plantation owner, Van Leyden, played by Roland Culver.
As Matt tries to figure out what happened to Linda during the war, he also has to deal with Mauribus, played by Thomas Gomez, a sinister fence who wants to get his hands on the smuggled pearls. Matt also has to contend with Van Leyden, who is suspicious of his intentions towards Linda and the pearls.
As Matt and Linda reconnect, they come to realize that their feelings for each other have not diminished over time. However, Linda is torn between her loyalty to her husband and her love for Matt. Meanwhile, Mauribus continues to make plans to steal the pearls from Matt, putting both Linda and Matt in danger.
The film is a blend of romance, suspense, and action as Matt tries to unravel the mystery of Linda's disappearance and keep the pearls out of Mauribus' hands. It is a classic noir film that features breathtaking cinematography and memorable performances from the cast.
