Simon of the Desert is a film directed by Luis Buñuel and released in 1965. The movie is a satirical and surreal portrayal of the life of Saint Simeon Stylites, a Christian ascetic who lived in Syria in the 5th century.
In the movie, Simon (played by Claudio Brook) is shown living on top of a tall column in the middle of a desert. He has been living there for six years, living a life of prayer and self-denial. People from all over come to visit him, seeking his blessings and advice.
One day, the Devil (played by Silvia Pinal) comes to visit Simon. She tries to tempt him to give up his ascetic ways and come back down to Earth. She taunts him with visions of a decadent and pleasure-filled world. Simon wavers at times, but ultimately remains steadfast in his faith.
The movie is known for its surreal and symbolic imagery, as well as its commentary on the nature of religious devotion and temptation. The film ends with Simon being knocked off his column by an earthquake, leaving the viewer to ponder the ultimate meaning of his sacrifice and his struggle with the Devil.
