Silver City is a political satire film that centers around the discovery of a corpse in a shallow grave during the campaign for governor of Colorado. The body is found by Danny O'Brien, a hard-living private detective played by Danny Huston, who is hired by the campaign to investigate claims that their candidate, Dickie Pilager (Chris Cooper), son of a powerful industrialist, is being sabotaged by a hostile media.
As Danny investigates the murder, he uncovers a web of corruption and greed that implicates Pilager and his family in a range of illegal activities, including environmental destruction, campaign finance violations, and cover-ups. The deeper Danny digs, the more he realizes that the case has far-reaching consequences for the future of the state and its citizens.
At the same time, the campaign is thrown into chaos as Pilager's handlers scramble to contain the damage, while his rival, liberal politician Wes Benteen (Richard Dreyfuss), targets him with attack ads and brutal debate tactics. As the election draws near, the race becomes a high-stakes battle for the soul of Colorado, with Danny caught in the middle of it all.
Directed by John Sayles and featuring a star-studded cast including Maria Bello, Kris Kristofferson, and Thora Birch, Silver City manages to be both a scathing indictment of the American political system and an engaging thriller with a twisty plot and memorable characters. With its themes of environmentalism, corporate greed, and media manipulation, the film remains relevant and thought-provoking today.
