Silk Stockings is a musical comedy film released in 1957, directed by Rouben Mamoulian and starring Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. The film is a remake of the 1939 film Ninotchka, which was also a comedy and starred Greta Garbo.
The story revolves around a Soviet official named Ninotchka (Charisse) who is sent to Paris to retrieve three of her colleagues who were sent to convince a Soviet composer to return to the USSR. When the composer decides to stay in Paris, the bumbling agents are sent home and Ninotchka is sent to complete the mission. She is a stern and humorless woman who is determined to carry out her duty and condemn the decadence of the West.
However, things become complicated when she meets Steve Canfield (Astaire), an American movie producer who is tasked with ensuring the composer stays in Paris. Steve is initially attracted to Ninotchka's seriousness and lack of humor, but soon starts to charm her with his wit and charm. As Ninotchka starts to fall under Steve's spell, she begins to question her own beliefs and starts to enjoy the pleasures of the West.
