Shrink is a 2009 drama film directed by Jonas Pate and starring Kevin Spacey, Robin Williams, and Saffron Burrows. The story follows the life of successful Los Angeles psychiatrist Dr. Henry Carter (played by Spacey), who is unable to come to terms with the recent loss of his wife and becomes a heavy marijuana smoker in an attempt to numb his pain.
Dr. Carter starts neglecting his patients and his own personal life, losing interest in his job and relationships. He grows distant from his best friend, an aspiring indie musician named Jeremy (played by Mark Webber) with whom he has always bonded over music, and starts distancing himself from his ex-girlfriend Jemma (played by Burrows), who still holds feelings for him.
But amidst his downward spiral, Dr. Carter begins to form a meaningful connection with a troubled teenager named Jemma (played by Keke Palmer), who is dealing with her own struggles and whom he initially treats pro-bono. As he helps her navigate her own troubles, Dr. Carter starts to rediscover his passion for helping people and begins to heal from his own losses.
The film explores themes of grief, addiction, and the limits of human connection, showcasing a raw and unflinching portrayal of mental illness and the difficulties of recovery.
