Showgirls is a 1995 American erotic drama film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Joe Eszterhas. The film stars Elizabeth Berkley, Kyle MacLachlan, and Gina Gershon. It tells the story of Nomi Malone, a young drifter with dreams of becoming a dancer, who arrives in Las Vegas and begins working as a stripper.
Nomi is determined to make it to the top and is willing to do whatever it takes to get there. She soon catches the attention of Cristal Connors, the star of the topless show where she works, as well as the show's choreographer, Zack. Nomi begins to climb the ranks, but her ruthless ambition and cutthroat tactics soon alienate her from those around her.
Despite its high-profile casting and hype leading up to its release, Showgirls was widely panned by critics and considered a box office failure upon release. However, it has since gained a cult following and been reevaluated by some as a camp classic. The film's overt sexuality and graphic depiction of violence and exploitation have been the subject of much debate and criticism.
