In Shortcut to Happiness, the Devil is portrayed as a flamboyant, charismatic character played by Alec Baldwin. He appears to Jabez Stone, played by Anthony Hopkins, after he makes a desperate plea for success. The Devil offers him success and fame in return for his soul.
Initially hesitant, Jabez eventually agrees to the deal and his life takes a dramatic turn. He begins to live a lavish lifestyle, complete with expensive cars, fancy clothes, and beautiful women. However, he soon realizes that the price of success is too high as he becomes increasingly unhappy and lonely.
When Jabez attempts to break the contract with the Devil, he realizes that it is easier said than done. The Devil uses every trick in the book to stop Jabez from cancelling the contract, and the situation becomes increasingly complicated when a trial is arranged to determine the fate of Jabez's soul.
The film is a modern retelling of the classic legend of Faust, and while it has its flaws, it is an interesting exploration of the human desire for success and the consequences that come with making deals with the Devil.
