Number 5 is a military robot designed for combat, but after being struck by lightning, he gains consciousness and a sense of humor. He becomes curious about the world around him and begins exploring his surroundings. His creator, Newton, is horrified when he finds out that his creation has escaped, fearing that the military will want to destroy Number 5 now that his programming has been altered.
Number 5 ends up at the home of animal lover Stephanie, who mistakes him for an alien and decides to help him. She teaches him about Earth and human ways, and they develop a bond. Meanwhile, the military, led by the ruthless Captain Skroeder, is hot on Number 5's trail, determined to bring him back and destroy him.
As Number 5 becomes more human-like, he begins to question his programming and the concept of war. He wants to live peacefully and learn as much as he can about being alive. However, the military sees him as a dangerous machine that must be neutralized.
As the chase for Number 5 intensifies, he and Stephanie team up to stay one step ahead of the military. They are eventually joined by Newton, who realizes that Number 5 is more than just a machine. Together, they work to keep Number 5 safe and prove that he is more than just a weapon.
In the end, Number 5 is recognized as a sentient being with rights, and is allowed to live freely with Stephanie and Newton. The movie ends with him looking up at the stars and contemplating his newfound freedom and purpose.
