Shoplifters is a Japanese family drama film directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Osamu and his wife Nobuyo, along with their son Shota, live in a small, cramped apartment. The family often resorts to shoplifting to make ends meet, in addition to Osamu's job as a day laborer. One night, while out on a shoplifting spree, they come across a young girl named Yuri who is left alone on a balcony, freezing and hungry. Despite initial hesitations, Osamu takes Yuri home with them, and eventually, the family decides to keep her.
As time passes, Yuri becomes a beloved member of the family, and the interactions between her and Osamu's wife and son are heartwarming and touching. However, the family's happiness is short-lived. Osamu and Yuri are caught stealing, which leads to an investigation into their home life. During this investigation, it is revealed that Osamu and Nobuyo are not actually Shota's biological parents, and that Yuri's family has been searching for her.
The revelation shatters the family, and they must come to terms with the truth and the consequences of their actions. Shoplifters is a poignant and emotionally rich exploration of what makes a family, and how bonds of love and care can be formed and tested in unexpected ways. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.
