Ship of Fools is a 1965 drama film directed by Stanley Kramer and based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Katherine Anne Porter. The film is set in 1933 on the German passenger ship, the Vera, which is traveling from Veracruz, Mexico to Germany.

The passengers on board the ship are from different backgrounds and classes, representing a microcosm of society in the early 1930s. The lead characters include Dr. Schumann, played by Oskar Werner, who is the ship's physician and falls for La Condesa, a beautiful Spanish Countess played by Simone Signoret. Jenny Brown, played by Lee Grant, is an American woman traveling with her lover David, played by Michael Dunn, but is also intrigued by the other passengers on board.

Other notable characters include Mary Treadwell, played by Vivien Leigh, a middle-aged woman traveling with her much younger lover, a German art dealer played by Heinz Rühmann. There is also Siegfried Rieber, played by José Ferrer, a businessman who represents the rising Nazi party and is traveling to Germany to further his political career.

Throughout the voyage, tensions build among the passengers as their differences in political beliefs, social status, and morality clash. The film portrays the societal struggles of the time and the characters' personal journeys as they confront their own biases and beliefs.

Ship of Fools was critically acclaimed upon its release and received several Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It is now considered a classic of 1960s American cinema.
