Shiloh

Drama,Family  United States of America

The movie Shiloh is based on the children's novel by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and was released in 1996. The film is set in rural West Virginia and follows the story of young Marty Preston, who rescues a beagle from abusive treatment by its owner Judd Travers.

Marty is a kind-hearted and compassionate boy who is deeply affected by the sufferings of animals. He immediately forms a bond with the beagle and wants to keep it as his own. However, his father, a stern and practical man, insists that the dog belongs to Judd and must be returned to him.

Judd is a local hunter who is known for his cruel treatment of animals. He views the beagle as his property and is angry when Marty takes the dog away from him. Despite the threat of retribution from Judd, Marty is determined to keep Shiloh and gives him a home in an old shed on his family's property.

The movie explores themes of animal rights, compassion, and family dynamics. Marty's love for Shiloh is contrasted with his father's strict adherence to the law and property rights. However, as the story unfolds, Marty's father also learns the value of kindness and empathy towards animals.

The film features a strong cast including Scott Wilson as Judd, Blake Heron as Marty, and Michael Moriarty as Marty's father. It was critically acclaimed for its portrayal of the bond between a boy and his dog and the message of compassion towards animals. The movie was followed by two sequels, Shiloh 2: Shiloh Season and Saving Shiloh.
