Sinful Seduction: The Lady Lou Dilemma

Crime,Comedy  United States of America

She Done Him Wrong is a classic Pre-Code comedy-drama film from 1933, starring Mae West as Lady Lou, the headliner of the Gay Nineties saloon. The film is loosely based on West's stage play Diamond Lil, with a storyline that revolves around Lou's string of male admirers, including the dangerous criminal called "The Spider" who has recently escaped from prison.

Lou's boss Gus Jordan (Noah Beery Sr.) is in financial trouble and owes money to The Spider, as well as the Salvation Army, which is led by Captain Cummings (Cary Grant). Meanwhile, Lou has her own romantic troubles, as she tries to navigate between her ex-boyfriend Chick Clark (Owen Moore) and her current lover Serge Stanieff (Gilbert Roland).

When The Spider shows up at the saloon looking for Lou, she tries to make excuses and hide him from the police. But Cummings, who has been undercover at the saloon, intervenes and helps arrest The Spider. At the same time, he tries to convince Lou to leave the saloon life behind and reform her ways, but she is not so easily persuaded.

After a series of misunderstandings and plot twists, Lou realizes that Cummings truly cares for her and decides to turn over a new leaf, while The Spider gets his comeuppance in a dramatic finale. The film was a huge box office success and helped to launch West's career as a Hollywood star.
