Liam Liu is a struggling actor in Los Angeles who is trying to make it big. He is in a relationship with an underage high school girl, Adelaide, whom he believes is 18 years old. However, when Liam turns 30, Adelaide reveals that she is only 16. Terrified of being prosecuted, Liam breaks up with Adelaide, leaving her heartbroken and devastated.

Shortly after his breakup with Adelaide, Liam learns that his father has inherited his grandmother's home in Shanghai, China, and he wants Liam to go and sell the house. At first, Liam is not interested in exploring his Chinese roots, but he has no choice but to go to Shanghai to sell the house.

Liam arrives in Shanghai, a city he has only heard about from his grandmother's stories. He is immediately confronted by a culture shock, and everything seems foreign to him. He meets a young woman named Micki, who speaks perfect English and becomes his tour guide around the city.

While living in Shanghai, Liam reconnects with Adelaide, who has followed him there. Liam's relationship with Adelaide has changed, and they develop a platonic friendship.

In the end, Liam has to make a decision between staying in China or going back to the U.S. to pursue his acting dreams. Liam realizes that home is where the heart is and decides to stay in China and start a new life there.
