The movie Shanghai takes place in 1941, four months before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The story follows an American Naval Intelligence officer named Paul Soames, who returns to Shanghai to investigate the mysterious death of his friend Conner. Soames discovers that his friend's death was not an accident, but instead, he was murdered. Along with the help of a local Japanese investigator named Tanaka, Soames sets out to unravel the secrets behind his friend's death.
While investigating, Soames meets a beautiful Chinese woman named Anna who owns a nightclub. The two quickly fall in love, but their relationship becomes complicated when Soames learns that Anna is not who she appears to be.
As Soames digs deeper into the case, he discovers a much larger secret that his own government is hiding. He learns that the Japanese are planning a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, but his superiors refuse to believe him. Soames must risk everything to get the message to the right people before it's too late.
The film is set in a tumultuous time in history when tensions between Japan and the US were high. The director, Mikael Håfström, captures a dark and dangerous atmosphere that captures the troubled nature of the time. The movie is filled with thrilling action scenes, dramatic plot twists, and a star-studded cast featuring John Cusack, Gong Li, and Ken Watanabe.
