The plot of the movie begins with JJ, who is a cyber security expert, investigating the death of his best friend Karim. JJ believes that Karim's death was not an accident and that there is foul play involved. He teams up with his father, John Shaft, who is a private investigator with a bad-ass reputation.
JJ and Shaft have a rocky relationship, as Shaft was never around during JJ's childhood and they are very different in their approach to justice. Shaft relies on his street smarts and his gun, while JJ is more methodical and prefers to use technology to solve problems.
