Shadows in Paradise is a 1986 Finnish film directed by Aki Kaurismäki. The movie revolves around the life of Nikander, a garbage man who feels disenchanted with his life. Nikander works alongside his friend, Olavi, and together they collect garbage from the streets of Helsinki.

One day, Nikander's life takes a sudden turn when Olavi unexpectedly dies while on a job. Nikander is devastated by Olavi's death and struggles to cope with the loss. Meanwhile, he meets a woman named Ilona, who he starts to fall in love with. Ilona works in a beauty salon and is also looking for a way out of her mundane life.

As Nikander and Ilona's relationship develops, Nikander discovers that Ilona is married and has a child. Despite this, they continue to see each other in secret. However, their affair is short-lived as Nikander soon finds out that Ilona is planning to leave town with her husband and their child.

Throughout the movie, Nikander also has to deal with an abusive ex-girlfriend and an alcoholic father who constantly asks him for money. Despite these challenges, Nikander remains hopeful and continues to search for meaning in his life.

Shadows in Paradise is a poignant, low-key drama that explores themes of love, loss, and the search for identity. The film is known for its dry humor and minimalist style, and it features strong performances from its cast, including Matti Pellonpää as Nikander and Kati Outinen as Ilona.
