Serious Moonlight is a 2009 dark comedy film directed by Cheryl Hines. The film follows a high-powered attorney named Louise (played by Meg Ryan) who discovers that her husband, Ian (played by Timothy Hutton), is having an affair with a younger woman (played by Kristen Bell). In a fit of anger, Louise duct tapes Ian to the toilet in their home so that they can have a conversation about the state of their marriage.
However, things take a turn for the worse when the couple is suddenly and unexpectedly interrupted by a trio of burglars (played by Justin Long, Andy Ostroy, and Kimberlee Peterson) who break into their house. The burglars tie Louise up and demand that they hand over a valuable diamond that Ian supposedly stole from a client. As the night wears on, the tensions between Ian, Louise, and the burglars rise, leading to a series of unexpected twists and turns.
Serious Moonlight was written by the late Adrienne Shelly, who is best known for writing and directing the indie hit Waitress. The film received mixed reviews upon its release, with some critics praising the film's darkly comedic tone, while others criticized its plot for being uneven and tonally jarring.
