Troubled Guests Find Solace Together

Drama,Romance  United States of America

Separate Tables is a 1958 drama film based on two one-act plays by Terence Rattigan. The film is set in a fictional English seaside hotel called the Beauregard, where a group of boarders have come to escape their daily lives.

The first story follows the relationship between Major David Angus Pollock (David Niven), a retired army officer who is guilty of a sex crime, and Jean Catherine Lawrence (Wendy Hiller), a lonely spinster who has fallen in love with him. As their relationship deepens, they both struggle with their own emotional problems and the disapproval of the other guests.

The second story centers around the marital problems of John Malcolm (Burt Lancaster), a writer, and his alcoholic wife, Ann Shankland (Rita Hayworth), who comes to the hotel to confront him. As they confront their problems, they also struggle with their own insecurities and the judgment of the other guests.

Throughout both stories, the guests of the Beauregard Hotel grapple with their own personal demons, including loneliness, guilt, and self-doubt. The film is a poignant exploration of human emotion and the power of societal judgment.
