Romance,Drama,History  Italy

Senso is a 1954 Italian historical drama directed by Luchino Visconti. The film is set in Venice and takes place during the Austro-Sardinian War of 1866. The main character is a beautiful and aristocratic Italian countess named Livia Serpieri (played by Alida Valli), who is married to an older, wealthy but unexciting man. Livia is frustrated with her loveless marriage, and she longs for excitement and passion.

One day, she meets an Austrian officer named Franz Mahler (Farley Granger), and she becomes infatuated with him. Despite being on opposite sides of the war, Livia and Franz begin a secret and passionate affair. Livia is so deeply in love with Franz that she is willing to sacrifice her own country and betray the Italian resistance. However, as their affair becomes more self-destructive, Livia finds that she cannot live with the consequences of her actions.

The film is highly regarded for its cinematography, costumes, and music. It explores themes of love, betrayal, nationalism, and the consequences of war. Senso was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and is considered one of Visconti's most significant works.
