The movie follows Dodge Petersen (played by Steve Carell), a mild-mannered insurance salesman who is left alone after his wife abruptly leaves him in a panic as news breaks that an asteroid named Matilda is on a collision course with Earth, and all efforts to stop it have failed.
With just 21 days until impact, Dodge attempts to make the most of his remaining time by reuniting with his high school sweetheart, Olivia (played by Keira Knightley), who he hasn't seen in years. Along the way, Dodge and his quirky, free-spirited neighbor, Penny (played by Knightley), go on a road trip that takes them through various disasters and anarchy as society crumbles around them.
As they journey towards Olivia, the two of them confront their fears, regrets, and desires. Dodge is forced to confront the fact that his life has been unfulfilled, while Penny grapples with the idea of never having found true love. As they navigate the crumbling world, they encounter different characters, some of which offer temporary comfort or escapism for the inevitable end.
As the asteroid approaches, the two of them must confront their fate and the realization that they might not be able to reach Olivia in time. Facing their mortality, they find comfort in each other's company and the realization that, despite all the chaos, they were able to find solace in each other.
