Mort Rainey (played by Johnny Depp) is a successful writer who is struggling to deal with the aftermath of his divorce. He retreats to his remote lake house to work on his next book and try to put his life back together.
While at the house, he is confronted by John Shooter (played by John Turturro), a stranger who accuses him of stealing his story. Shooter becomes increasingly aggressive and begins to stalk Rainey, threatening him and his friends. Rainey hires a private investigator to try to prove his innocence, but the evidence against him begins to stack up.
As the situation becomes more and more intense, Rainey begins to question his own sanity. He sees visions of his ex-wife and becomes increasingly paranoid. The truth about Shooter's accusations and Rainey's own mental state are slowly revealed in a shocking finale.
Throughout the movie, the audience is kept guessing about what is really happening and who is telling the truth. The tension builds as Rainey's paranoia and Shooter's threats increase. Johnny Depp's performance as the troubled writer is riveting, keeping the audience invested in his character's fate until the very end.
