Valentina Cortese stars as Maria, a young woman living in post-World War II London. Her sister Nora (played by Audrey Hepburn in one of her first film roles) is a ballet dancer who becomes unknowingly embroiled in a plot to assassinate a foreign ambassador.
Maria becomes aware of the plot after she meets a man, Louis (played by Serge Reggiani), who is a member of the conspiracy. She tries to warn her sister and seek help from the police, but she is unsure of whom she can trust.
As the plot unfolds, an innocent bystander is killed in an explosion intended for the ambassador. Maria and Nora are caught up in the violent aftermath, and Maria takes matters into her own hands to help the police track down the conspirators.
