Sea Fog, also known as Haemoo, is a 2014 South Korean thriller movie directed by Shim Sung-bo. The film is based on a stage play by Bong Joon-ho and Shim Sung-bo and inspired by a true story that occurred off the coast of Yeosu in 2001.
The film follows the story of a fishing-boat crew that faces difficult economic circumstances due to poor fishing. In an attempt to earn some quick money, the crew agrees to smuggle a group of illegal immigrants from China to Korea. The people that they agree to smuggle are desperate to escape poverty in China and are willing to pay a large sum of money to reach their destination.
As they set sail, the crew faces difficulties due to the inclement weather, the cramped quarters of the ship, and the language barrier between them and the refugees. The situation becomes tenser when they discover that they have accidentally smuggled in some dangerous criminals along with the refugees.
The crew's moral conscience is put to the test as they begin to experience firsthand the harsh realities that the refugees face. As the journey progresses, tensions between crew members rise and conflicts arise as they try to find a way out of the situation.
