Detective William Somerset (played by Morgan Freeman) is a jaded and experienced detective on the verge of retirement. He is paired with young and impulsive Detective David Mills (played by Brad Pitt) on a case involving a serial killer who is targeting people based on the seven deadly sins.
The killer, who calls himself "John Doe," begins his killing spree by forcing an obese man to eat until his stomach ruptures, representing the sin of gluttony. He then murders a wealthy lawyer by making him choose between killing a prostitute or himself, representing the sin of greed.
As the detectives investigate the killings, they discover that the killer is using these crimes to create a larger message about the moral decay of society. The next victim is killed for the sin of sloth, followed by wrath, envy, pride, and finally lust.
The tension between Somerset's careful, methodical approach and Mill's impulsive nature leads to conflicts between the two detectives as the case becomes darker and more disturbing. The final twist, in which the detectives discover the killer's true motive, is a startling revelation that will leave viewers shocked and disturbed. Se7en is a masterful thriller that explores the dark side of human nature and the consequences of sin.
