In the movie, the Mystery Gang arrives in Oakhaven to attend a book reading by horror novelist Ben Ravencroft, who claims to be a distant relative of one of the town's founders and rumored witches, Sarah Ravencroft. However, strange occurrences begin to happen, including sightings of Sarah's ghost and a black cat that seems to be following the gang.
When they investigate further, they meet a group of goth musicians who are fans of Ben Ravencroft's work but are skeptical of his claims of being related to Sarah. They also discover that the local mayor and his cronies are trying to develop the nearby wetlands, which are said to be haunted by Sarah's spirit.
As the Mystery Gang delves deeper into the mystery, they uncover a plot by Ben Ravencroft to revive Sarah's spirit and gain her supposed magical powers. However, they manage to thwart his plans and reveal his true intentions to the town.
In the end, it is revealed that the black cat following the gang is actually a transformed version of Sarah Ravencroft's loyal cat, who had been watching over her resting place in the wetlands. With the mystery solved, the gang continue on their adventures.
